You will be asked for a fee eventually. Not yet. Send six photographs of the machine and we will tell you the grade band, roughly what it is likely to need, and whether it is even worth paying us to look at properly.
01 · What to send
The six that tell us most
These are six of the same slots we shoot on a paid inspection. Send them in this order and take them on level ground. If you can only get four, send four — we will tell you what we can and cannot see.
The hour meter
Photographed with the dash lit, not a written-down number. We compare the reading against wear later.
Left track, side on
Whole track in frame, machine on level ground. Sprocket teeth visible if you can manage it.
Right track, side on
The same again from the other side. Undercarriage is usually the biggest number on the machine, so it gets two of the six.
Engine bay, cover open
Stand back far enough to get the whole bay. Oil and coolant staining tells us a great deal before anyone touches anything.
Three-quarter front
The whole machine at an angle, boom down. Posture, paint age and any obvious repair all show up here.
What the free answer gives you
- The overall grade letter, A to E
- A deferred-cost band, as a percentage of machine value
- Six photographs, annotated where something matters
- Whether the title and hypothecation status needs a closer look
What photographs cannot show
- Crankcase blowby, start smoke, how a cold engine actually behaves
- Hydraulic cycle times, and drift over five minutes
- Pin and bush play, which only shows when the function is worked
- What is underneath fresh paint at a high-stress weld
- Whether the hour reading matches the wear on the pedals and grips
- Whether the financier's NOC can actually be obtained
We will tell you which parts of the free answer we are confident about and which we are not. That distinction is the whole job.

- Hydraulic cycle times against the OEM specification, and a five-minute drift measurement
