How to tell if a machine's hours have been wound back
How can you tell if an excavator's hour meter has been tampered with?
Compare the displayed reading against physical wear that cannot be reset: pedal rubber and floor plate, seat bolster collapse, joystick grip wear, paint loss at the entry step and grab handle, and the condition of the undercarriage relative to the claimed hours. A machine claiming 9,000 hours with 20,000-hour pedal wear is telling you the reading is unreliable. When wear and reading disagree, treat the disagreement itself as the most important finding — every other number you have been given about that machine becomes doubtful.
An hour meter is a number on a screen. Wear is a physical fact. When the two disagree, believe the wear.
This matters more than most single findings, because the hour reading is the number every other judgement gets anchored to — the price, the service interval, the assumption about what has been replaced and when. If the anchor is wrong, everything hanging off it is wrong too.
The wear points that cannot be reset
None of these are conclusive alone. Together they are very hard to fake, because faking them means replacing parts that nobody replaces on a machine they are about to sell.
Pedal rubber and floor plate
The travel pedals and the floor plate under the operator’s heels take a specific pattern of wear that accumulates with hours in the seat. Rubber wears smooth, then through. Look at where the heel actually sits, not the middle of the pedal.
A machine with 8,000 claimed hours should have pedals that look used. Pedals worn through to the metal do not belong on a machine with 8,000 hours.
New pedal rubber on an otherwise unrestored machine is worth a question. It might be honest maintenance. It might be the cheapest possible way to hide twelve thousand hours.
Seat bolster and cushion
The left bolster on the operator’s seat collapses before anything else, because that is the side the operator swings over getting in and out. Look at the stitching and the foam recovery, not the cover — covers get replaced.
Joystick grips
Grip rubber polishes where the palm and thumb sit. A high-hour machine has grips that are shiny in a specific, asymmetric pattern. Fresh, matte, untextured grips on a machine claiming eight thousand hours are worth noticing.
Paint at the entry step and grab handle
This is the one people forget, and it is one of the best. Every entry into the cab wears paint at exactly the same two places. Machines wear a bare-metal patch on the step edge and a polished patch on the grab handle, and the size of those patches scales with how many times somebody climbed in.
You cannot repaint them convincingly, because fresh paint on a step is itself a signal.
The undercarriage, read against the claimed hours
Undercarriage wear is roughly proportional to hours worked, adjusted heavily for ground conditions. A machine claiming 6,000 hours with an undercarriage at 20% remaining has either worked in a quarry every one of those hours, or has not worked 6,000 hours.
Ask which. The answer is informative either way — quarry hours are hard hours, and that is a different conversation about price.
Service records and fuel logs
Where they exist, they are the strongest evidence available. A service history with dates and readings that walk steadily upward is difficult to fabricate convincingly. Gaps in the sequence, or a reading that goes backwards between two services, is the whole answer.
What to do when they disagree
Here is the part that separates a useful inspection from a box-ticking one.
Do not average them. Do not decide the machine is “probably around twelve thousand”. The disagreement is not a measurement problem to be resolved — it is the finding.
Record two separate things:
- The reading. What the display says, photographed with the dash lit.
- The verification opinion. Whether the physical wear is consistent with it, and if not, what the wear suggests instead.
Merging those two into one number is how reports become worthless. Anyone reading the report later needs to know both what the machine claimed and what the machine’s own condition said about that claim.
On our reports, an hour-meter inconsistency overrides the grade entirely. It becomes the headline, and the report states plainly that every other figure in it should be read as less reliable than it would otherwise be.
Why the meter itself is not the point
It is worth being clear about what is actually being alleged.
Hour meters get replaced legitimately — a failed cluster, a dead display, a rebuilt cab. A replaced meter reading 2,000 hours on a machine that has run 14,000 is not necessarily fraud; it is sometimes just a repair nobody documented.
That is exactly why the honest way to handle it is to report both facts and let the buyer decide. A seller who volunteers “the cluster was replaced in 2022, the machine has about 14,000” is being straight with you, and the machine may still be a good buy. A seller who watches you look at the pedals and says nothing is a different proposition.
The one-line version
Photograph the hour meter. Then photograph the pedals, the seat, the grips and the step, and look at all five together. If they tell the same story, you have a number you can use. If they do not, you have something far more important than a number — you have found out what kind of seller you are dealing with, before you paid him.
